Melatonin has been shown to increase heart rate when administered in patients taking nifedipine (a calcium channel blocker antihypertensive) [167] and in other studies [162]; however, effects were lacking in other human research [160;163;164]. When measured in the morning, the relationship between salivary melatonin and exercise-induced heart rate changes was steeper than when measured in the evening [600]. Clinical significance is unclear. There are several rare or poorly described reports of abnormal heart rhythms, palpitations, fast heart rate, or chest pain, although in most cases, patients were taking other drugs that may account for these symptoms [371;109;64;372;373].
