파킨슨병(Parkinson's Disease)은 신경계 퇴행 현상의 하나로 중뇌에 존재하는 흑색질(substantia nigra)이라는 부분의 도파민 세포 사멸에 의해 나타나는 질환입니다. 주요 4대 운동 증상은 가만히 있을 때 주로 발생하는 떨림, 강직, 움직임 둔화 및 자세 불안정 등이며 우울과 같은 정신 증상, 수면 이상, 자율신경계 이상 등의 비운동 증상도 나타납니다.

우리나라의 경우 파킨슨병의 발생 및 유병률에 관한 대규모 자료가 아직 부족하지만 안산시 인구를 대상으로 이루어진 임상 조사에서, 파킨슨병이 아닌 파킨슨 증후군을 기준으로 하였을 때 18세 이상에서 유병률이 10만 명당 374명이었으며, 60세 이상
